What to Do With Stump Grinding Chips After the Crew Leaves

HomeBlogWhat to Do With Stump Grinding Chips Aft

The Chip Pile Is Bigger Than You Think

This is the single most common surprise we run into on a Donelson job: a ground stump produces roughly two to three times the chip volume homeowners picture when they book. A stump that looked like a two-wheelbarrow job above ground turns into a pile that can fill a small truck bed, because grinding chews through the root mass below grade too, not just the visible trunk.

We bring this up before we start now, precisely because it used to catch people off guard at the worst moment — right when the pile is sitting in the middle of a front yard on McGavock Pike or Donelson Pike and the homeowner realizes it's not going anywhere on its own.

Option One: Haul It Away

The simplest option is to have us haul the chips off the property entirely, leaving a raked, level, walkable spot behind. This is the right call if you want the yard back to normal fast, if you're planning to sod or seed right away, or if you just don't have a use for that much wood mulch. It's the option most Donelson customers pick, especially on smaller lots where there's nowhere convenient to store a large pile.

Option Two: Keep It as Mulch

If you've got garden beds, a vegetable patch, or landscaping that could use fresh mulch, leaving the chips is free material — you're paying for the grinding either way. Fresh wood chips from a mixed species like water oak or sweetgum work fine as a top-dressing mulch, though they'll rob some nitrogen from the soil as they break down in the first season, so they're better suited to established beds than a brand-new planting.

We'll mound the pile near the hole rather than scattering it, so you can move it to where you actually want it on your own schedule.

Backfilling the Hole Itself

Whether you keep the surface chips or not, the hole where the stump used to be needs something in it if you're planning to plant or sod over the spot soon. Loose ground wood in the hole will settle and decompose over a year or two, which can leave a shallow depression right where you didn't want one. For a quicker turnaround, ask us about backfilling with topsoil instead — it costs a little more but avoids that delayed sinking.

The short version

Plan for two to three times the chip volume you expect, and decide before grinding day whether you want it hauled, kept as mulch, or used to backfill. Topsoil backfill beats loose chips if you're planting over the spot within the year.
