The maple tree on the line between you and next door
The builders who put this subdivision up in the early fifties set the houses fifteen or twenty feet apart and dropped a silver maple almost exactly on the property line between them. Seventy years later that tree is four feet through, its roots are in somebody's sewer lateral, and the surface roots have lifted the strip both households mow.
When it finally comes out, the stump is in the worst possible spot. It is not in the front lawn where a machine could drive right up to it, and it is not in an open back yard. It is in a corridor with a gas meter on one wall, an air conditioner on the other, a downspout in the middle, and a chain-link gate at the end that was hung in 1958. There is no alley behind Dearborn Dr or Guaranty Dr to fall back on, so whatever comes in has to come in past all of that.
Fifteen feet of room and no way around to the stump
Every quote out here starts with the pinch point. Not the stump diameter, the pinch point. Walk the route you would take from the street to the stump and find the narrowest thing on it, then measure it. Nine times out of ten it is the gate, but on Cottage Ln it is often the corner of the carport, and on the houses with a second-hand fence it is the post spacing.
A standard walk-behind wants a bit over three feet of clear opening. Under that we go to a narrower machine, which fits but feeds slower and adds time to the bill. There is a third option nobody thinks of: on a chain-link run, a fence company can drop one panel in ten minutes and rehang it the same afternoon, and that is sometimes cheaper than paying for the slow machine.
Silver maple grinds quick and makes a mountain
Softer than the oaks two streets over, so the wheel eats it fast. That is the good news. The bad news is volume. A 36-inch silver maple, ground properly with the surface roots chased back, produces a heap two or three times bigger than the hole it came out of, and in a fifteen-foot side yard there is nowhere on earth to put it.
So the leave-or-haul conversation is a real one here rather than a formality. If your back yard is open we will barrow the spoil around and spread it thin along a fence line. If it is not, it goes in the truck. We quote both numbers up front so you are not deciding it while a pile grows next to your house.
What gets called in before anybody starts
Tennessee 811 gets a ticket when you book, and the state's three working days is the reason we ask for a few days of lead time rather than showing up tomorrow. That covers the utilities the city and the gas company own.
It does not cover the things a previous owner buried. On these lots that usually means an irrigation loop somebody put in during the eighties or a dog-fence wire running the perimeter of the side yard, and neither shows up on a locate. If you know about one, walk it with us and stick a flag in it. If you inherited the house and have no idea, tell us that too and we will probe by hand around the flare before the wheel gets near it. That costs ten minutes.

Will you need to go through my neighbor's yard?
Almost never, and not without them saying yes first. The whole reason we run narrow equipment is so a job can be done from one side. If the only physical route to your stump genuinely crosses the line, we will tell you that before quoting so you can have the conversation next door rather than have a stranger with a machine knock on their door on a Tuesday morning.
The stump straddles the property line. Whose job is it?
Legally that is between the two of you and we stay out of it, but practically speaking whoever calls us is who we bill. What we will do is grind the whole thing rather than half of it, because a stump cut down the middle is worse than either neighbor started with. Plenty of Dearborn and Guaranty owners split the cost and we send one invoice with both names on it.
Can you take out the roots lifting my driveway apron while you are here?
Yes, within reason. We can chase the lateral roots back from the slab edge and take out the ones humping up the concrete, which usually means opening a shallow trench alongside the apron and grinding along it. What we will not do is cut structural roots on a tree that is still standing and expected to stay standing. If the maple is already down, everything is fair game.
How long does one silver maple stump take?
A 30-inch one in an open yard is well under an hour. The same stump in a side yard where every barrow load has to come out through a gate is closer to two, and that difference is most of what separates our quotes in this neighborhood. Access drives the price out here far more than diameter does, which is why we ask for the route photo.
