The concrete moved, and the tree that moved it is already gone
The subdivision was not named for nothing. Silver and sugar maple went in along Maplecrest Dr, Aubrey Dr and Dennywood Dr in the late forties and fifties, right in the strip between the walk and the curb where every builder in America was putting shade trees at the time. Maples run their roots along the top of the soil, and seventy years of that has cracked and tilted three-foot-wide sections of sidewalk all over this neighborhood.
The part that catches people out is that taking the tree down does not settle the concrete back. For a year or two the roots keep swelling, then they start to decay and the walk drops into the voids instead. Meanwhile the mower deck scalps the root humps every pass, the trip edge is still there, and the driveway apron keeps opening up at the joint.
Why the stump is only half the job on these lots
A grinder that takes the stump to depth and stops has fixed the eyesore and left the problem. The lateral roots running under your walk and apron are the ones lifting concrete, and they are still there when the wheel shuts off.
On a Maplecrest job we grind the stump, then follow the two or three main laterals out toward the slab and cut them back below the concrete rather than leaving them to rot in place. That is an extra half hour and a shallow trench that gets backfilled and seeded. It does not lift the slab back to level, nothing short of replacing the section does that, but it stops the next round of movement and it lets a concrete contractor pour a new panel without wood underneath it.
Grinding next to seventy-year-old concrete
Old sidewalk mix is not modern sidewalk mix. It is thinner, the aggregate is bigger, and the edges chip if you look at them wrong. We do not run a cutting wheel up against a slab face.
Whatever wood is left standing right against the slab gets dug out by hand with a mattock and a shovel. Before that, a plywood shield goes up between the machine and any concrete, brick or siding within throwing distance, because the thing that actually damages property on a grinding job is a chunk of buried gravel leaving the wheel at speed. Rubber mats go over the walk if the machine has to cross it.
Two Maplecrest maples, two different afternoons
There are sugar maples and silver maples on the same block here, and they do not grind alike. Sugar maple is dense and tight-grained, the feed is slow, and a big one will take the edge off a set of teeth. Silver maple is soft and wet, cuts three times faster, and throws a stringy fibrous spoil that mats down and has to be pulled clear as you go along.
There are still a few American elm stumps in this subdivision too, survivors of the trees that went out in the sixties, and elm is the worst of the three to grind. The grain interlocks, so it comes off in tough ropes rather than chips. None of that changes the price by much on its own, but it changes the time, and we would rather tell you that than run over on a quote.
What goes back in the hole under a shade canopy
Most Maplecrest back yards are still heavily shaded by the maples that did not come down, and that changes the fill decision. Fresh grindings tie up nitrogen as they break down, so a patch backfilled with pure spoil in deep shade is a patch that will grow nothing for two seasons.
We rake enough back in to fill the void, cap it with four to six inches of topsoil, and leave the mound slightly high because it will settle. If you are putting sod down rather than seed, tell us and we will take the spoil away entirely and finish flat. Either way you get a walk-around before we go so you can see the finished grade with your own eyes.

Can you get the roots out from under my driveway apron on Weona?
We can cut them back and grind them out to the edge of the slab, and we can follow a lateral a foot or so under an apron where there is room to work. What nobody can do is grind out a root that runs the full width of a driveway without breaking the concrete. If the apron is already cracked, the cheaper sequence is to let the concrete guy remove the panel first and have us grind the open ground.
Will grinding crack my sidewalk?
Not the way we run it. The wheel stays off the slab, the last of the wood next to it comes out by hand, and a shield catches thrown material before it hits anything. Concrete that is already lifted and cracked can settle further once the roots holding it up are gone, and that is worth knowing in advance, but it is the root decay doing it rather than the grinder.
Nothing will grow where the old stump was. What is going on?
Almost always leftover grindings. Wood chips pull nitrogen out of the soil while they decompose, and if a previous crew raked several yards of spoil back into the hole and threw grass seed on top, you have effectively planted into mulch. Scrape the top six inches off, replace it with real topsoil and it will come in. We can do that on the same visit if you want the old spot fixed.
How deep do you actually go?
Six to twelve inches below the surrounding grade for a lawn, and we lean toward the deeper end on maples because the surface roots start so high. If something is going over the top, a shed pad, a driveway extension, a fence post in the same hole, flag it at booking and we take it further down and wider than a lawn grind strictly needs.
