Stump Grinding in Sunny Acres, Donelson

Sunny Acres, yes, six minutes away and we are out there most weeks. A couple of pictures gets you a real number, usually within the morning. Before booking, walk the back yard and flag every sprinkler head and light fixture. That step saves the most money here.

A back yard that got finished, and a stump that did not

Since around 2015 a lot of the mid-century ranches on Renee Dr, Rustic Ct and Windemere Dr have been taken back to the studs and done properly, and the back yards got the same treatment. Patio, fire pit, irrigation zones, low-voltage path lighting, a run of new sod, sometimes a gas line out to a grill.

What did not get dealt with was the 1960s silver maple or sweetgum in the corner, and last winter it finally came down. Now there is a stump sitting in the middle of forty thousand dollars of finished landscape, and the thing a homeowner is actually asking when they call is not whether we can grind it. It is whether we are going to drive a machine over the lighting transformer on the way to it.

The lines nobody is coming to mark

Tennessee 811 covers the utilities that belong to the gas company, the water department and the telecom carriers. It stops at your meter. Everything a renovation put in the ground is private and invisible to a locate crew.

In this neighborhood that list is long: irrigation laterals at six to ten inches, low-voltage lighting cable often barely under the sod, invisible fence loop, and increasingly a gas run out to a fire feature. If you had the work done, you may have an as-built from the landscaper, and that is gold. If you bought the house finished, the practical method is to run each irrigation zone for thirty seconds and flag every head, then walk the light fixtures and flag those. The cable runs between them in more or less a straight line, and that gives us a map good enough to work from.

Backing onto the park means the grinder comes up the side

Several Sunny Acres lots run straight up against Two Rivers Park, which means no rear gate and no alley. The machine comes down the side past the condenser and the hose bib and out into the yard, and everything that comes out has to go back the same way.

Across finished hardscape that is a matting job. Plywood or rubber over pavers and stamped concrete, straight lines rather than turns on the decorative surfaces, and a barrow with a soft tire rather than dragging a load across a patio. It is not complicated but it is time, and it is the reason a stump in a finished back yard prices differently from the identical stump in a plain lawn two streets over. Where the side route is genuinely too tight or too finished, the fallback is a smaller machine walked in and a longer morning, and we will say which one your yard needs before you commit to a date.

Sweetgum and Bradford pear stumps leave different messes

Both are common here and they finish differently. Sweetgum grinds clean and predictably, and the main thing to know is that the seed balls in the soil around it will keep coming up as seedlings for a season or two regardless of what we do to the stump. That is not the stump regrowing, it is last year's crop germinating.

Bradford pear does regrow. It suckers off the root collar aggressively, so with pear the width of the grind matters more than the depth, and we take a wider bite around the base than a lawn job strictly needs. Expect a handful of shoots from outlying roots the first spring either way. Two passes with a mower ends it, and it beats the alternative of chemicals near your new sod.

Sunny Acres questions

I have no idea where the irrigation runs. What now?

Run the system zone by zone for half a minute each and stick a flag next to every head that pops. That tells us where the laterals are, because the pipe runs head to head. Do the same for path lights. Twenty minutes of your time gives us a working map, and it is far cheaper than the alternative, which is a repair call to whoever installed it.

Will the machine mark my patio pavers?

Not if it crosses on board. The risk with pavers is a loaded turn twisting an edge unit out of line, so we roll straight across on matting and do the turning on grass or the drive. If your patio has a fragile surface, tell us before the day and we will look at whether a longer route around it is available, which it often is.

How soon can I lay sod over the spot?

As soon as the hole is backfilled and settled, which can be the same afternoon if you want it that way. Tell us at booking and we haul the spoil off rather than raking it in, bring the level up with topsoil, and tamp it slightly high so it settles flush. Sod over pure grindings never establishes properly, so that step is the one that matters.

The stump is under a raised bed we built. Does the bed come apart?

At least partly. We need the wheel to reach the wood at ground level, so a course or two of the wall usually has to come off on the machine side, and the soil in that section gets pulled back. Most raised beds go back together in an hour. Send a photo of the bed and the stump together and we will tell you exactly how much has to move.
